Sterling silver is an alloy that contains 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals. It is often certified with a 925 stamp. For most purposes, it is preferred to pure silver which is too soft to withstand the processes of molding, involved in creating jewelry or other silver items. Unlike pure silver, your sterling silver jewels require special care in order to prevent or remove darkening (which is due to oxidation) as well as to preserve your jewels and protect them from harm.
How to care for your sterling silver jewelry:
- Wrap your sterling silver in a special bag or cloth that will prevent it from darkening. Wrap each item individually – rings, earrings, pendants, etc. – in order to prevent scratching. If you do not have special jewelry wrapping tissue, use felt or some other soft material.
- Keep the wrapped silver jewelry in a cool, dry place where it will also be protected from sunlight, artificial lighting, and air. Light and air exposure facilitate the darkening of the silver.
- Do not wear sterling silver jewelry in chlorinated water or while you are using household cleaners. Also, take them off when bathing.
- Use a solution of soft soap and water to clean your silver ornaments. Apply the solution to the silver and wait for the water to be absorbed. Dry with a soft towel. If your jewels require additional cleaning use a special cleaning solution for silver.
- Use a polishing cloth of fine felt in order to polish your silver jewelry. Do not use sheets of paper or paper towels! Their fibers can leave scratches on the surface of your silver.
